Bugs And Creatures Galore!

Fernlea Drive Class children has a fabulous day at Braywick Nature Centre in Maidenhead.  The day started with a first for some children – a journey on a coach.  All strapped in, the adventure began…..

At the centre, the children were greeted by the Park Rangers who took the children on a walk around.  Fun was had trying to count how many holes could be found in tree trunks and guessing which animals might live there.  The children found a Monkey Puzzle tree and were amazed to discover that they date back as far as the Jurassic period.

Next stop was learning about the organisms that live in the waters around the centre.  The class were given nets, buckets and pictures of the animals that they might find.  All the children had fun dipping nets into the water and seeing what exciting creatures they had captured.  The Park Rangers helped the children identify the animals - sticklebacks, froglets, bloodworms and even a toad were found.

A quick stop for lunch and then it was on to a Mini Beast Hunt.  The Park Rangers helped the children learn about the life cycle of a ladybird and everyone had a turn at using nets to see which insects could be found in the long grass around the centre.
