KS2 Meets Author of Traditional African Tales During Black History Month

Our Year 4 and Year 6 classes were privileged last week to virtually meet a published author!

As part of the Wokingham Children’s Book Festival and Black History Month, our two classes attended a virtual meet and greet with Shiko Nguru, author of the recently published ‘Mwikali and the Hidden Mask.’  In this novel, Nguru passes on traditional African tales by connecting them to the experiences of modern characters.  She went on to explain how important it is for stories that were originally passed via oral tradition to be written down, so that they may be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Both Y6 and Y4 were able to ask Nguru questions about her writing, including if she is planning on writing any more books and what time and effort it takes to write a complete book.  The children came away from the session inspired and ready to write.

Hopefully, we have some future authors in our midst who will return to visit us and continue to pass on the tales from their own cultures.
