Autumn 2
Curriculum Overview
Project Title: How Have Structures Influenced Our Lives?
This half term, our Year 1 children will embark on an exciting cross-curricular project exploring the theme of structures—what they are, how they are built, and why they matter, especially in our local area.
What Will the Children Be Learning?
Through a rich blend of subjects, children will:
- History: Investigate a historically significant local structure, learning how it has changed over time and why it is important to our community.
- Geography: Explore their local environment, identifying whether they live in a town, village, or city, and use maps and directional language to describe locations and routes.
- Design & Technology (DT): Learn how to design, build, and evaluate their own model structures using paper and card. They will explore how to make their models strong, stable, and free-standing.
- Art: Apply finishing techniques such as painting and embellishing to enhance the appearance of their models.
- Science: Observe seasonal changes and explore the properties of everyday materials, linking this to their model-making.
Project Outcome
By the end of the term, children will have created their own 3D model inspired by a local landmark. This hands-on project will help them understand how structures are designed and built, and how they reflect the history and identity of a place.
Enrichment Opportunities
To bring learning to life, children will:
- Go on a local walk to explore their surroundings.
- Visit a historically significant structure in the area.
Global Learning
Children will also be introduced to famous structures from around the world, encouraging them to compare and contrast with local buildings and develop a sense of global awareness and appreciation for diversity.
Supporting Learning at Home
You can support your child by:
- Talking about buildings and landmarks you see together.
- Looking at maps and discussing directions.
- Reading some of our linked texts together, such as Rosie Revere, Engineer or The Three Little Pigs.
