Spring 1
Project Title: What Impact Has Engineering Had on the Lives of Humans?
This term, our Year 1 children will become young engineers and historians as they explore the fascinating world of cars—how they were invented, how they’ve changed over time, and how they might look in the future. The project will culminate in the children designing and building their own model cars!
What Will the Children Be Learning?
Through a rich and engaging curriculum, children will:
- History: Learn about the development of cars from the Benz Patent Motorwagen to the Tesla Roadster. They will explore the life and legacy of Alec Issigonis, the engineer behind the iconic Mini Cooper.
- Design & Technology (DT): Investigate how cars are built, focusing on axles, wheels, and chassis. They will design, test, and build their own model cars, using a range of materials and joining techniques.
- Art: Explore colour mixing and painting techniques to decorate their cars, making them personal and unique.
- Science: Revisit the properties of materials, understanding which are best suited for different parts of a car.
- Maths: Use knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes to help design and construct their models.
Project Outcome
By the end of the term, each child will have designed and built a personalised model car that meets a specific design brief. They will also reflect on how cars have changed our lives and imagine what cars might look like in the future.
Enrichment Opportunities
To bring their learning to life, children will:
- Visit a local car museum.
- Meet a mechanical engineer.
- Explore real cars on the school playground.
- Watch videos of car production lines and concept cars.
Global Learning
Children will explore the environmental impact of cars, including the benefits of electric and hybrid vehicles. They’ll also consider how we can make travel more sustainable and how cars might evolve to meet future needs.
Supporting Learning at Home
You can support your child by:
- Talking about the different types of vehicles you see and how they’ve changed.
- Exploring how your family car works and what it’s made of.
- Reading linked texts such as Rosie Revere’s Big Project Book for Bold Engineers or My Mummy is an Engineer.
- Discussing how we can travel in more environmentally friendly ways.
