Autumn 1
Project Title: How Can Data Help Us Understand the World Around Us?
Focus Question: What Makes the Best Coat?
This term, our Year 2 children will become scientists, geographers, and designers as they explore the properties of materials and how climate affects clothing choices. Their learning will culminate in designing and making a coat for a travelling teddy bear, using data and scientific testing to inform their decisions.
What Will the Children Be Learning?
- Science: Investigate the properties of everyday materials and test their suitability for different climates.
- Geography: Learn about the seven continents and five oceans, and identify hot and cold areas of the world.
- Design & Technology (DT): Design and make a textile coat using skills such as measuring, cutting, sewing (running stitch), and joining materials.
- Maths: Use data handling skills to support scientific investigations and design decisions.
Project Outcome
Children will:
- Design and make a coat for a teddy bear travelling to a specific climate.
- Test materials for water resistance, flexibility, and durability.
- Use a design brief to guide their creative process.
- Evaluate their final product based on its functionality and suitability.
Enrichment Opportunities
- Hands-on material testing and sewing workshops.
- Use of atlases and globes to explore world geography.
Global Learning
Children will explore identity and diversity, learning how clothing needs differ around the world and why warmth and protection are basic human needs.
