Spring 1
Project Title: What Impact Has Engineering Had on the Lives of Humans?
Focus Question: How Did the Development of Flight Impact the Life of Individuals in the UK?
This term, Year 2 children will become engineers, historians, and artists as they explore the fascinating history of aviation. They will learn about key individuals who shaped the development of flight and use their knowledge to design and build their own aviation models.
What Will the Children Be Learning?
- History: Study the Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart, and Amy Johnson, and understand how aviation has developed over time.
- Design & Technology (DT): Investigate mechanisms by building rubber band helicopters and design a model of a flying machine using appropriate materials and tools.
- Art: Use papier-mâché and other materials to create realistic 3D models, developing skills in sculpture, texture, and embellishment.
Project Outcome
Children will:
- Build a scale model of a historical flying machine.
- Present their model and explain how aviation has impacted lives in the UK.
- Develop skills in research, design, teamwork, and presentation.
Enrichment Opportunities
- Explore Google Earth and timelines to understand aviation history.
Global Learning
Children will explore diversity in aviation, learning about pioneers from different backgrounds and how the field has become more inclusive over time.
