Project Title: How Are Cultures Expressed Around the World?

Focus Question: How Does My Locality Compare to Areas Around the World?

In this final term, Year 2 children will explore Australia and compare it with their own local area. They will learn about plants, geography, art, and food culture, culminating in a fruit salad inspired by Australian ingredients and a piece of Aboriginal-inspired artwork.

What Will the Children Be Learning?

  • Geography: Compare the UK and Australia, exploring physical and human featuresclimate, and culture.
  • Science: Investigate how plants grow, including a long-term experiment on what affects plant health.
  • Art: Study Australian Aboriginal art, especially the work of Rosemary Petyarre, and create a collaged leaf composition using painting and texture techniques.
  • Design & Technology (DT): Taste and evaluate tropical fruits, then design and make a fruit salad using safe food preparation skills.

Project Outcome

Children will:

  • Create a collaged artwork inspired by Aboriginal culture.
  • Design and prepare a fruit salad using tropical fruits.
  • Compare their local area with Australia, understanding cultural and environmental differences.

Enrichment Opportunities

  • Taste a variety of tropical fruits.
  • Explore Aboriginal art and techniques.
  • Make links with local artists or chefs.

Global Learning

Children will explore citizenship and commonality, learning that while cultures differ, we all share the same planet. They will understand that “my locality is someone else’s distant place.”
