World Book Day Events!

World Book Day

It’s that time of year again - World Book Day is nearly upon us. This year, World Book Day is going to be celebrated on Thursday, 2nd March. We have a number of amazing activities and events taking place at school, both on the day and in the days preceding our celebrations, so please note the following:

Monday, 6 February – Sunday, 26 February-- Whole School Readathon/Listenathon in Benefit of Read for Good

This readathon/listenathon is an opportunity for children to use their love of reading for the benefit of others. Funds raised during this event will benefit Read for Good, a non-profit  organisation that provides books and storytellers to children’s hospitals. The top readers in each key stage (EYFS, KS1 and KS2) will win a prize! If you need more books at home for this event, don’t forget to check out our Scholastic book club at

https://schools.scholastic.co.uk/windmill-rg41/digital-book-club.

Thursday, 23 February: Scholastic Book Fair

The book fair will be visiting Windmill Primary School for the first time since before COVID!

Children will be able to browse books on Wednesday, 22 February to see what might interest them. The children can then purchase books during school on Thursday, 23 February. Additionally, parents will be able to come in from 8:50 – 9:50 and 2:30 – 3:30 on Thursday, 23 February to make any purchases. Both cash and card are accepted on the day.

Thursday, 2 March: World Book Day

1. Dress Up Day- This year, as a school, we will be reading ‘The Word Collector’ by Peter H. Reynolds. Each child is invited to dress as a word in English. This could be done by demonstrating what the word is (ex- all in pink for pink, wearing a card lightbulb above their head for ‘inspiration,’ etc.) writing the word on a sash, portraying a mystery word which others should figure out, etc. We will then compile all the words on the day to create our Windmill World Book Day Dictionary.

2. Reading Café- Parents from EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 will be invited to join their child

in our Reading Café in the school hall. Come read a story and share a warm drink and a treat with your child to celebrate the joy of reading together.

EYFS Café: 9.45 – 10.15

Year 1 Café: 10.20 – 10.50

Year 2 Café: 10.55 – 11.20

3. Years 3 and 4 Trip to Wokingham Public Library- Our Y3 and 4 children will be taking a walking trip to the Wokingham Public Library to see what resources are on offer in our town centre! Children will learn how to sign up for a library card, experience a story-telling session and see what events will be up-coming at the library itself.

4. Year 5 and 6 Live Online Event with Award-Winning Author Michael Morpurgo- As part of our participation in the Read for Good Readathon/Listenathon, years 5 and 6 have been invited to join a live online event starring Michael Morpurgo, author of such famous books as War Horse, Kensuke’s Kingdom and The Butterfly Lion. Mr. Morpurgo will share tips on how he finds inspiration for his stories, encouraging budding young authors to give their writing a go.

5. World Book Day Goes Global- The entire school has had the privilege of organising a story-reading exchange with pupils overseas. Each class at Windmill has been matched with a class at Nazareth Elementary School in Rochester, New York, USA, in order to hold a virtual story time. Older readers on both sides of the pond will read to younger readers, showing that reading is truly an international skill!

These activities and more are in store for your children this World Book Day. Please watch this space for further information and updates about our special day sharing our love of literature with the whole world!

As always, should you have questions or concerns, do please feel free to contact me via the school office. Thank you for your participation and teamwork in making this year’s World Book Day super-spectacular!

Best wishes,

Mrs. E. Conte,

Year 6 Teacher/KS2 Phase Leader/English Lead
