Wider Curriculum Y6 Summer 2
This term, our big question is:
“How are cultures expressed around the world?”
Children will explore the diversity of Asia’s geography and culture, create art inspired by willow patterns, and develop practical skills in design and technology by sewing and cooking.
What We’re Learning
- Geography: Human and physical geographical diversity of Asia and comparisons with the UK.
- Art: Willow pattern designs and how cultural influences shape art.
- DT: Sewing techniques to create a cushion and preparing a savoury dish inspired by Asian street food.
Key Learning Journey
This term, children will begin by locating Asia on a world map and exploring its physical and human geographical features, comparing selected countries with the UK. They will research similarities and differences between countries and present their findings through an oral presentation. Building on this, pupils will investigate how cultures influence design, focusing on the history and features of willow pattern art, and experiment with line, tone, shade, and tint to create motifs for their own designs. They will then apply these skills to produce a hand-made cushion cover featuring a willow pattern design. Finally, children will explore the concept of street food, taste examples from Asia, and plan, prepare, and cook a simple savoury snack, considering hygiene, healthy eating, and cooking techniques.
