What Will Children Learn This Year?
Reception focuses on building strong foundations in early maths through play and exploration. Children develop number sense, pattern recognition, and spatial awareness, preparing them for formal learning in Year 1.
Key Learning Across the Year
Autumn Term
- Counting and Cardinality: Counting objects and understanding “how many”.
- Subitising: Recognising small quantities without counting.
- Patterns and Shapes: Spotting patterns and naming simple shapes.
- Spatial Awareness: Understanding position and movement.
Spring Term
- Composition of Numbers: Breaking numbers into parts (e.g., 2 and 3 make 5).
- Comparison: Comparing quantities (more, less, equal).
- Partitioning: Exploring how numbers can be split and combined.
Summer Term
- Numbers to 10: Counting, ordering, and comparing.
- Patterns in Doubles and Evens: Recognising simple number patterns.
- Equal Distribution: Sharing objects fairly.
