What Will Children Learn This Year?

Reception focuses on building strong foundations in early maths through play and exploration. Children develop number sense, pattern recognition, and spatial awareness, preparing them for formal learning in Year 1.

  • Subitising: Recognising small quantities without counting.
  • Patterns and Shapes: Spotting patterns and naming simple shapes.
  • Spatial Awareness: Understanding position and movement.

Spring Term

  • Composition of Numbers: Breaking numbers into parts (e.g., 2 and 3 make 5).
  • Comparison: Comparing quantities (more, less, equal).
  • Partitioning: Exploring how numbers can be split and combined.
