GLF Schools

GLF Schools was founded in 2012 in order to enable the federation of Glyn School (an academy in 2011) and Danetree Junior School. Together, we began our journey to become a MAT of more than 1000 talented staff working with over 10,000 children in 40 schools across 5 regions in southern England.

Summer 1

In What Way Is the World Around Us Diverse?

This term, Year 4 will explore the question:
“How are living things and their environment connected?”

Through this project, children will investigate the diversity of life on Earth, the relationships between living things and their habitats, and the impact humans have on the environment. They will study biomes, food chains, and the digestive system, culminating in a creative campaign to raise awareness about protecting our planet.

What Will Children Learn?

  • Science:
    • How living things are grouped and classified.
    • How environments can change and pose dangers to living things.
    • Food chains and the digestive system in humans.
  • Geography:
    • Climate zones, vegetation belts, and biomes.
    • A detailed focus on rainforests and human impact on these ecosystems.
  • Art:
    • Creating artwork inspired by Jeannie Baker to depict environmental changes over time.

Key Experiences

  • Watching clips from Planet Earth and exploring real-world campaigns.
  • Creating an awareness campaign and presenting it to an audience.

Why This Matters

This project helps children understand the importance of biodiversity and sustainability. They will explore global issues such as climate change and deforestation, developing a sense of responsibility and belief that collective action can make a difference.

How You Can Support at Home

  • Discuss how human actions affect the environment.
  • Explore local wildlife and habitats.
  • Share books such as The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry or Greta & the Giants by Zoe Tucker.
  • Watch documentaries about rainforests and climate change.

The Final Outcome

By the end of the term, children will:

  • Create and present a campaign to raise awareness about protecting biomes.
  • Produce a piece of artwork showing environmental change over time.
  • Demonstrate their understanding of food chains, classification, and the impact of human activity on ecosystem
