How Are Cultures Expressed Around the World?
This term, Year 4 will explore the question:
“What is Africa like?”
Through this project, children will learn about the diversity of African countries, their physical and human geography, and cultural expressions through art, music, and food. They will also investigate sound in science and create a piece of batik artwork inspired by traditional African dress.
What Will Children Learn?
- Geography:
- Locate Africa and its countries.
- Compare physical and human geography features across different African countries and the UK.
- Science:
- How sounds are made and travel through different mediums.
- Patterns between pitch, volume, and the features of objects that produce sound.
- Art:
- Explore African textiles and patterns.
- Learn and apply the batik technique to create a final textile piece.
- Design & Technology:
- Investigate African cuisine and adapt recipes to create a rice dish.

- Creating a batik artwork inspired by African culture.

- Exploring African music and making instruments such as pan pipes.
- Comparing African countries to the UK in terms of geography and culture.
