GLF Schools was founded in 2012 in order to enable the federation of Glyn School (an academy in 2011) and Danetree Junior School. Together, we began our journey to become a MAT of more than 1000 talented staff working with over 10,000 children in 40 schools across 5 regions in southern England.

Year 1 Maths

What Will Children Learn This Year?

In Year 1, children build strong foundations in number sense, calculation strategies, and geometry. The curriculum is designed to develop confidence and fluency in key mathematical concepts through practical activities, problem-solving, and reasoning.


Key Learning Across the Year

Autumn Term

  • Early Years to Year 1 Transition: Building confidence with numbers and simple comparisons.
  • Comparison of Quantities and Measures: Understanding more, less, and equal.
  • Composition of Numbers (0–10): Breaking numbers into parts and wholes.
  • Geometry – Properties of Shape: Recognising and naming 2D and 3D shapes.

Spring Term

  • Addition and Subtraction Strategies: Using different methods to combine and separate numbers.
  • Composition of Numbers (11–19): Understanding teen numbers and place value.
  • Measurement – Length and Height: Comparing and measuring objects.

Summer Term

  • Measurement – Mass and Volume: Exploring weight and capacity.
  • Counting, Coins, and Money: Recognising coins and understanding value.
  • Fractions: Introducing halves and quarters.
  • Position and Direction: Understanding movement and turns.
  • Measurement – Time: Reading clocks and understanding days, weeks, and months.

How We Support Learning

  • Daily Counting Routines: To strengthen number sense.
  • Number Fact Fluency: 15 minutes daily outside the main maths lesson.
  • Practical Resources: Use of manipulatives and interactive tools to make learning hands-on.

How You Can Help at Home

  • Count objects around the house and compare quantities.
  • Talk about shapes you see in everyday life.
  • Practice reading clocks and discussing time.
  • Use coins for simple money games.
  • Encourage your child to explain how they solved a problem.
