Autumn 2
How Have Structures Influenced Our Lives?
This term, Year 5 will explore the question:
“How have Ancient Egyptians impacted how we live today?”
Through this project, children will investigate the achievements of Ancient Egyptian civilisation, the importance of the River Nile, and how early technologies shaped life. They will also learn about forces and mechanisms in science and apply this knowledge to design and build a mechanical device inspired by Ancient Egyptian innovations.
What Will Children Learn?
- History:
- The achievements of Ancient Egyptian civilisation.
- How historians use primary and secondary sources to understand the past.
- Science:
- Forces such as gravity, friction, air and water resistance.
- How mechanisms like levers, pulleys and gears make work easier.
- Design & Technology:
- Design, test and build a mechanical device to move water or heavy loads.
- Learn safe and accurate cutting and joining techniques.
- Geography:
- Locate Egypt and understand the role of the River Nile in settlement and trade.
Key Experiences
- A class assembly for parents!
- Investigating forces through practical experiments.
- Building prototypes and refining designs.
- Creating a final mechanical device inspired by Ancient Egyptian technology.
Why This Matters
This project helps children understand how human innovation has shaped societies for thousands of years. They will see how Ancient Egyptian achievements in engineering and agriculture still influence modern life.
How You Can Support at Home
- Explore maps and locate Egypt and the River Nile.
- Discuss why rivers are important for settlements.
- Share books such as Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll or Ancient Egypt: Tales of Gods and Pharaohs by Marcia Williams.
- Watch documentaries or videos about Ancient Egypt and its structures.
The Final Outcome
By the end of the term, children will:
- Present their understanding of Ancient Egyptian achievements.
- Design and build a working mechanical device.
- Reflect on how Ancient Egyptian innovations have influenced modern life.
