Spring 1
What Impact Has Engineering Had on Human Lives?
This term, Year 5 will explore the question:
“How has knowledge of light been used to impact humanity?”
Through this project, children will investigate how light travels and how this knowledge has been applied in engineering and design. They will learn about reflection, shadows, and how light influences art. Using this understanding, they will design and create a product inspired by periscopes, combining science, design, and aesthetics.
What Will Children Learn?
- Science:
- How light travels in straight lines and reflects off surfaces.
- Why shadows form and how their size changes.
- Design & Technology:
- Design, prototype, and build a device that allows someone to see around or over an obstacle.
- Conduct market research and use findings to inform design choices.
- Art:
- Explore how artists use light and shadow to create tone and perspective.
- Apply tonal techniques in observational drawings.
Key Experiences
- Mini investigations into light and reflection.
- Creating prototypes inspired by periscopes.
- Conducting market research and interpreting results.
- Designing and building a functional, aesthetically pleasing product.
Why This Matters
This project helps children understand how scientific knowledge influences technology and design. It also develops problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration skills, showing how engineering impacts everyday life.
How You Can Support at Home
- Discuss examples of mirrors and reflective surfaces in everyday life.
- Explore how shadows change throughout the day.
- Share books such as Sight by Romana Romanyshyn or Step Into Science: Light by Peter Riley.
- Encourage creative sketching using light and shadow.
