Spring 2
How Has Art Represented Aspects of Our Lives?
This term, Year 4 will explore the question:
“How does art represent different periods of history?”
Through this project, children will learn about the Anglo-Saxon and Viking struggle for power in Britain and how art and design reflected life during these times. They will investigate historical sources, explore printing techniques, and create a Viking-inspired coin purse featuring a monogram they design and print themselves.
What Will Children Learn?
- History:
- Britain’s settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scots.
- The Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England up to Edward the Confessor.
- Art:
- Explore monograms and illuminated manuscripts.
- Learn printing techniques and create a monogram design.
- Design & Technology:
- Design, plan, and sew a Viking coin purse using different stitches and pattern pieces.
Key Experiences
- Investigating primary and secondary sources, including artefacts.
- Exploring Anglo-Saxon and Viking craftsmanship and culture.
- Learning printing techniques and creating a monogram patch.
- Designing and sewing a Viking coin purse using a range of stitches.
Why This Matters
This project helps children understand how Britain’s identity has been shaped by invasion and cultural exchange. They will also see how art and design have been used historically to express identity and status.
How You Can Support at Home
